What advice would you give someone who is just starting out their own website? or starting over a website?

I would say to not give up, it takes time to get a lot of members so don't give up and keep it up.

Keep at it and not give up like you said. Keep the content alive, fresh, and always coming. Make yourself stand out.

Never have a co-owner who is equal to you in power. You must have the final say and be the head honcho if you want it to work. Two head honchos won't work. Aside from that, just don't give up.

Keep at it and never give up! I've had my forum for nine months now, and I still enjoy it. Sure, I've had days where I really want to give up and what-not, but I keep pushing myself because I really enjoy running a forum and I just love it and wouldn't change it for anything!

  • Advertise on every site that you can.
  • Keep your forum fresh by posting new topics every day. Hold contests and have an award system.
  • Keep a possitive attitude.
  • Be patient as forums take time to build up a community base.
  • Be open to the suggestions of your members.
  • Choose your staff carefully as they should be friendly and approachable. Also when choosing staff, keep in mind the time zones which you need coverage.
  • There is nothing more valuable than a good Co-Admin. You can't be there 24/7 and do it all alone.
  • Always treat your members the way you want to be treated.
  • Have rules that are not outrageous and don't over moderate the rules.
  • Members join forums to have fun and relax. Make your forum a fun and friendly place where members will want to come back.

Yeah, but don't the same sort of tips apply for a Website? Obviously not all of our advice would, but wouldn't SOME of it though? Course, the never giving up part could probably be played by ear, because a person could try like heck for months and never get anywhere with his site, or maybe he runs out of ideas for content or something.... who knows?
