A breakup can be a period of feeling great loss, similar in some ways to the feeling of grieving someone's death. It's no coincidence that so much of popular culture (movies, songs, books, magazines, etc.) revolves around stories of heartbreak, because it's something that almost everyone can relate to.
Since each person is different, each connection is different, and the circumstances leading to each breakup play out differently, healing after a heartbreak is a very individual thing. Each person copes with it in their own way, and there's no right or wrong answer. In fact, I think the healthiest way to deal with a breakup is to give yourself the time and space to fully process the emotions and experiences to learn from them and move on.
