Is there really an afterlife?

What do you think happens after you die?

From a scientific standpoint, the afterlife is just your cells and atoms drifting away and becoming something new. Or something like that.

In a way, I hope there is an afterlife. Crushing darkness is a depressing thing to have coming for you, but oh well.

in the hebrew occult thought, the child of a blessed union is endowed with a spark of the master of the local universe, YHVH's , own spirit. if we make it through this life without committing any really serious sins, we get reborn immediately into a better life and a more difficult one if we screw up too badly in this one.

Yes I believe in an afterlife and how you spend it will be defined by whether you lived for Christ or for yourself as all man are fated to die once and then face judgment.

Yes I believe there is an afterlife. I believe in afterlife there is a heaven and hell, and what you do here on earth detetermines where you will go during judgement when your on the throne of God.

The whole concept of an afterlife preys on the primal human fear of the unknown. It is a convenient escapist release valve from the shackles of our earthly toil and pipe dreams. It serves as a moral thermostat for those who truly believe in it; good actions are rewarded and bad actions are punished, increasing the likelihood that the person will act morally.

Its effect is twofold -- therein creating the illusion of free-will (in an attempt to escape a fated, predestined outcome based on environmental circumstance) and correcting perceived earthly injustices through moral responsibility. In essence, I think it is a “moral” taxis (organisms move towards a stimulus or away from it). Whether we move toward eternal reward or away from eternal punishment, whatever label or motive is attached to the driving the force, it's essentially the same stimulus.

Immortality? There are two kinds. The first lives in the imagination of the people, and is thus an illusion. There is a relative immortality which may conserve the memory of an individual for some generations. But there is only one true immortality, on a cosmic scale, and that is the immortality of the cosmos itself. There is no other.

My beliefs are 2 combined.

I believe in reincarnation, I believe that my soul will be reborn into a new life until it is my time to enter the great hall to prepare for Ragnarok.

It would seem that most of the responses have been dancing around one central fire here...

... ... pun? what pun? ... ....

YES, there is an "After Life", that something of what makes a given Person a unique and special type of animal does continue after the body assumes room temperature and DOES have something that can loosely be termed An Existence that goes forward into the future sans its corpse.

Now, as to exactly what that existence is is open to debate, and appears to be what we are discussing.

Does that 'soul' we'll call it just to hang a familiar term on it, does that soul 'come back' and re-enter another corporeal form and play this game again?

Does that soul go on to "meet its maker" and stand some sort of Judgement?

Does it leave this plane of the Universe and go on to be something akin to one of "a thousand points of light" with no distinct individuality or consciousness.

Or does it end up floating around here and occasionally knocking a picture off the wall for attention?

Personally, I believe that once we're done here, MOST of us will go see the One that spoke this mess into existence. And, personally, I'm looking forward to it.

it's said that the pinpoint of light somebody sees when the die, is the light shining up the vaginal canal that their soul is being reborn through.
