I'm currently writing a speech trying to encourage people to use our airport, which is really difficult. Many people are afraid of flying for various reasons.

Are you afraid of flying? If so, why?

I am afraid of flying although I have flown quite a bit in the past. I've even been overseas; however, on a trip back from London, we were flying to Chicago and over the lakes there was quite a bit of nasty turbulence, the kind that drops altitude and brings on some very scary feelings. I think that's what did it for me. Ever since then, I was on edge when I flew after that, but I didn't fly for much longer. I think I was at an age where I realized how high up and how fast we were going, and if by some luck of the draw we crashed I most certainly wouldn't survive. I think the last time I flew was when I was 16 and I'm 29 now. Plus, my panic disorder doesn't help, so I will never get on a plane again as long as I experience it.

This is just my experience on the matter, though. Air travel is, statistically speaking, the safest kind of transportation we have out there. It's much faster, and makes things rather easy. You might just think of it as a quicker bus ride in the air where you're being chauffeured to your destination on wings rather than on wheels.

I'm not. It's not necessarily my favourite mode of transportation, but it's pretty convenient and that counts for a lot.

Although I do find planes vaguely unnatural. They're just weird really.

I haven't been on a plane but one day I want to try it.

Not afraid of flying. I think what turns most people off about using air travel is all the screening crap you have to go though. What is allowed, what isn't allowed and then the "gawd forbid you look like a terrorist" so then you get a "special screening". Thank gawd I always have clean underwear on. One stain and I'd be detained for "special screening of said stain". I'd also really like to know what happens to the stuff they confiscate because of "whatever" reason they make up.

Now with the recent suicidal pilot who not only killed himself but 148 innocent people, I think I need to stay "grounded" for now.

Personally, I'm not afraid of flying...I just don't like it. I don't NOT like it enough to prevent me from doing it, I'm just not a big fan of it, especially the take-offs and landings which - rumor has it - NEED to be a part of every successful flight.

The person who probably really doesn't like flying and needs to be convinced to use an airport again, is the poor soul who gets placed NEXT to me, on each flight...

...and whose arm I claw at having lost all motor control, during each take-off and landing.

Sorry, fellow fliers. :cry2:

My Stepdaughter is afraid of flying even though she gets on a plane at least once a year. She's afraid of it crashing. Yet, she drives a car every day where she's is more than likely to get hurt in a crash or die.

Yet, her rational thought does not compute this. For a lot of people they hold onto a fear of "If" fear is was stops people doing most things when they can't rationalise it.

So she gets a prescription from her doctor for it.

The problem I have is that you're more likely to--if the plane does crash--die in that crash as opposed to surviving. I've been in plenty of car accidents and I'm still here, I'm alive, I'm not handicapped. And honestly? I'd much rather die in a car accident than in a plane crash. That's just not how I want to go out of this world.

Agreed. I can think of better ways to go out of this world, too.

One better way would be to die while having great sex, so - if I'm ever going to be in an airplane crash - I hope it's while being initiated into The Mile-High Club and I have that heart attack before I realize the plane is going down.

From my fingertips to God's eyes, and all that good schtuff...

:D

Understood, but the ratio of deaths in car accidents vs Planes?

Is it customary to join the mile high club in the loo? Knowing my luck they'd find my head stuck in the loo ass up for trying to join it during in a plane crash. Lol

@ whoflung:

Oh, *crap*...do you HAVE to be initiated in the restroom?!? Hmmmm...I...did...not...know...that.

If not, I was just going to do the guy sitting next to me and make the arm-clawing-thingy a *natural* part of doing The Nasty. Now, I have to drag him back to the restroom, kicking and screaming?!?

*Double crap*. The other passengers'll probably think I'm a terrorist, taking a hostage. OOOOooooo...NOT the way I want to go out. :!!:

Believe me. I know the ratio of death in car accidents vs. planes, as well as the ratio of plane accidents to cars, but there's also less planes than cars. That's all anyone ever talks about when trying to convince you not to be afraid of flying. In any case, I truly don't care how safe flying is. To me, it doesn't feel safe. I hate it. It terrifies me, and it puts me into a very scary, very powerful panic attack and I'd much prefer not to experience that.

Understood but the volume of people is a lot more in a plane crash than a car crash.

I get the panic attacks, but it still doesn't change my stance on the fear aspect. Like with any fear in life. You make the choice to if you do something to control it or it controls you.

Take off and landing is the BEST part. I love the feeling as the plane gets loft.

I dont have a fear of flying but after the recent pilot suicide it does make you think twice.

Cant imagine the feeling of going down, staring death right in the face.

I dont fly much though.

I know that, and your life is different than mine. However, my panic attacks are very real and very frightening. Fortunately, I only really get them every once and a while now, but that was after some therapy. I know 100% that if I got on a plane I would pass out from the panic, and that's not something I want to go through. That debilitating, terrorizing fear is one of the worst things I've ever experienced in my life.

I do understand Dee, perhaps I'm coming across too harsh. It isn't my intent. It's something that manifests.

I mentioned my step daughter who has the same panic attacks and is prescribed Diazepam to help with that.

I've been on over a handful of medications that don't exactly help to numb the panic. I would have to be knocked out, eg. prescribed something hard enough that I fell asleep. But your step daughter is a different person and maybe that works for her. I just know it hasn't worked for me in the past. Not flying works for me.

If one medication worked for everyone there wouldn't be so many. Some people try therapy to work on it.

Some people are fine with just not flying. Each person is different.
