If they are, they are rare in the universe and therefore it's going to take us a lot of time and intelligence to find them. There's so many conditions that must be met on a planet for there to be life on it and thus far we haven't found a planet that fit all that criteria.
I find it funny that we always think of aliens coming to us in space ships made using their super intelligence and invading our planet. If we do find life out there someday, I wonder if we'll be the ones with the space ships invading some other planet. It seems to be going that way with the advances we're making in space travel and our constant obsession with exploring the universe.

I think that humans are very arrogant to believe that we are the only life forms in the universe. just because humans need certain conditions to live doesn't mean other life forms require the same things. Look up at the sky tonight. When you see those stars, think about our sun. How many of those stars are the sun of another planet? The sun of another planet that may even have life on it, perhaps.
