Haitian police arrested 10 U.S. citizens after they tried to take 33 Haitian children out of the earthquake-stricken nation, authorities said Saturday.

The Baptist church members from Idaho called it a Haitian Orphan Rescue Mission, meant to save abandoned children from the chaos following Haiti's earthquake. Their plan was to scoop up 100 kids and take them by bus to a rented hotel at a beach resort in the Dominican Republic, where they planned to establish an orphanage.

If they didn't have authority from the Haitian government, then sure, arrest them for kidnapping.

I dont think they meant any harm but it does seem like the acted without really thinking things through.

That's so stupid, they were doing the right thing by saving people's lives! They don't deserve to be arrested!

So they are arrested for doing a good thing?

You have to have consent from the child and their family. Kidnapping is illegal, regardless of if an earthquake hit or not. What they're doing is great, but the way they're going out about it is completely wrong. I feel the Americans who tried to kidnap the children should be sent back to the US and serve no prison sentence, because the lives of these haitian children may have been in better hands, but you don't take them without permission. Think about the kids' families.. What if they thought their child was killed or something? That's totally wrong and corrupt of the Americans to do.

The hati police accused the americans of planning on trying to sell the children for $10,000 each.

Wow, I just got done reading that, and my throat just went completely dry. That's shocking, that's for sure!

Imagine a state, say California, was hit with an earthquake as large as the one Haiti was hit with, maybe even larger, and some people you didn't know from outside the country came and started taking up children.

What would you do, assuming you're a police officer?

Their intentions might have been fine, but just taking kids up isn't. That's kidnapping.

Well if the children's parents were killed in the earthquake and there is no family to be found. Perhaps these kids are just wandering the streets with no way to take care of themselves, then I can understand why that group would want to save them. I doubt they went up and ripped the chidren out of their family's hands.

Well, if they didn't consult anyone. I do believe they deserved to be arrested. It IS considered kidnapping by doing so, after all. And that's certainly illegal.

They didn't need consent from the childrens parents because they were dead... But stil it was wrong to take them without informing the government...

I read that they didnt know all the family were dead for sure. That they just took them without knowing if they were orphans or had just got separated from their family.
