DETROIT (WWJ) It’s a situation that is really bugging bus riders — and creating a potentially itchy, scratchy ride in Detroit. Just when riders thought the problem-riddled transit system couldn’t get any worse, there’s reportedly a bed bug situation.

Detroit Councilwoman Brenda Jones brought up the issue of bedbugs on city buses during a recent meeting. She said she’d been told by a young lady that they’re a problem, and wanted to know what’s being done to solve the problem.

D-DOT Director Dan Dirks says many systems nationwide have had to deal with this dilemma — and Detroit’s buses are sprayed periodically.

“I can’t tell you exactly, I know it’s done periodically,” Dirks told WWJ’s Vickie Thomas. “When we get a request in, we’ll do it that day.”

CAMDEN, N.J. (AP) - A teacher and former councilman in Camden County faces prison after admitting he engaged in inappropriate sexual communications with 17 male students.

Charles Reilly is scheduled to be sentenced Friday after he pleaded guilty to official misconduct, child endangerment and attempted child endangerment.

The boys ranged in age from 12 to 16 years old and were students at Pine Hill Middle School. Reilly was an art teacher, boys' soccer coach and a Pine Hill councilman.

Prosecutors say Reilly asked the boys to bring semen-stained tissues to school so he could make art projects with them.

Prosecutors will seek a 15-year prison sentence and he would have to serve at least five years before he'd become eligible for parole.

Army officer is told not to enter his daughter's high school because he's wearing his uniform

Sep 10, 2014

ROCHESTER, Mich. (WJBK) - Lieutenant Colonel Sherwood Baker says he is just a father who was trying to help his daughter find her way at her new high school.

Sherwood, who has served in the Army for 24 years, was told by Rochester Adams High School security that if he wanted to get into the school with his daughter he was going to have to go home and change his clothes.

Baker's wife Rachel Ferhadson says, "Before he was allowed in, the security guard stopped him and said sorry you're not allowed in the school. Security told him men and women in uniform weren't allowed because it may offend another student."

Baker says he was simply coming to the school to speak with his daughter's counselor regarding her class schedule but was turned away at the doors because he was not wearing a tie.
Rochester Schools superintendent Robert Shaner, who is a veteran himself, quickly took care of the situation apologizing to the family for their troubles.

Shaner sent a letter to Fox 2 which says: "The district has apologized for any perception that individuals in uniform are not welcome in the school. The district does not have a policy excluding individuals in uniform and will be working with administration and the firm that handles our security to make sure district policies are understood and communicated accurately."

The Baker family has scheduled a meeting with the principal of Rochester Adams High School in the coming days.

The only answer is "Homeschooling"

A D.C. public school gave a sixth grade class a homework assignment that required students to draw comparisons between former President George W. Bush and Adolf Hitler.

The assignment was given out this week at McKinley Tech Middle School in Northeast and has angered at least one parent who complained about the homework.

A copy of the assignment, made by the parent, instructs students to draw examples from two texts they were assigned and to fill in a Venn diagram with similarities and differences between the two men.

“Now that we have read about two men of power who abused their power in various ways, we will compare and contrast them and their actions. Please refer to your texts, ‘Fighting Hitler — A Holocaust Story’ and ‘Bush: Iraq War Justified Despite No WMD’ to compare and contrast former President George W. Bush and Hitler. We will use this in class tomorrow for an activity!” reads the text at the top of the assignment.

History books are written by the "winners".

Find one that you would call accurate and ask somebody else what they think of it.

This thread is just about random stuff that doesn't fit anywhere else but might spark a discussion. I think you asked me that before. (in another life as it were)

Unfortunately, the late Mr. Russo (he died in 07) tried to fly his "no tax" flag from a broken flagpole many years ago.

2006 NYT
... Yet among those thanked in the credits for their help in making the film is Anthony Burke, an I.R.S. spokesman. Mr. Burke said that when Mr. Russo called him asking what law required the payment of income taxes on wages, he sent Mr. Russo a link to documents, including Title 26 of the United States Code, citing the specific sections that require income taxes be paid on wages. Title 26 says on its face that it is law enacted by Congress, but Mr. Russo denied this fact.

“Title 26,” Mr. Russo said in an interview last week, “is not the law, it is I.R.S. regulations and to be a law it has to be passed by Congress.” Mr. Russo added that he had studied the matter closely and was confident that he had the facts.

Arguments made in court that the income tax is invalid are so baseless that Congress has authorized fines of $25,000 for anyone who makes them. But even though the penalty was quintupled, from $5,000, it has not deterred those who assert this and other claims that Congress and the courts deemed “frivolous arguments.”

The film also states repeatedly that people are tricked into paying income taxes because no law makes them liable for taxes. The tax code uses the word impose, whose definition includes the concept of liability, courts have held in published decisions.

The Obama administration quietly has been forcing new gun buyers to declare their race and ethnicity, a policy change that critics say provides little law enforcement value while creating the risk of privacy intrusions and racial profiling.

With little fanfare, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) in 2012 amended its Form 4473 — the transactional record the government requires gun purchasers and sellers to fill out when buying a firearm — to identify buyers as either Hispanic, Latino or not. Then a buyer must check his or her race: Indian, Asian, black, Pacific Islander or white.

The amendment is causing a headache for gun retailers, as each box needs to be checked off or else it’s an ATF violation — severe enough for the government to shut a business down. Many times people skip over the Hispanic/Latino box and only check their race, or vice versa — both of which are federal errors that can be held against the dealer.

AVONDALE, Pa. – The first letter addressed to the late David Perry arrived five weeks after he died at home June 5.

Sent from the Department of Veterans Affairs, the envelope was to be opened "by addressee only." Perry's wife Helena opened it anyway.

"You remain eligible to receive (VA) health benefits," it read. A handwritten yellow sticky note added, "Please provide copy of death certificate."

Helena thought she'd notified VA. Regardless, she said, "It's kind of hard for him to open it when he's not here – and even harder for him to send the death certificate."

Several days ago, a VA billing statement addressed to David Perry arrived. Helena opened that one too. Her late husband, it seemed, owes the government 59 cents.

"So if it's not paid by October the 11th, I'm going to have additional – or he will have additional charges on his 59 cents," she said. "So I did call and talk to them, and informed them again that he was dead, and I just didn't think he would be able to pay it."

She pointed to the envelope and its pre-printed postage. "And how ridiculous to pay 48 cents to send it?"

On Sept. 4, VA sent David Perry another reminder: to get a flu shot.

Students graduating from Goddard College in Vermont this weekend have selected an infamous American prisoner as their commencement speaker, the school announced this week.

Mumia Abu-Jamal, who was convicted of first degree murder for the 1981 shooting death of Philadelphia police officer Daniel Faulkner, will speak to a small group of Goddard undergraduates via a pre-recorded video message on Sunday.

Abu-Jamal was originally sentenced to death for the 1981 cop killing. After a lengthy fight in court, that sentence was later reduced to life without parole. Abu-Jamal maintains his innocence.

His case became a flash point for debates over the U.S. justice system after advocates argued that his initial conviction was the result of an unfair trial.

The case is still so contentious that it effectively derailed the approval of President Obama’s nominee to run the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division. Debo P. Adegbile has in the past represented Abu-Jamal in court; Adegbile previously worked for the NAACP’s Legal Defense Fund, which helped to overturn Abu-Jamal’s death sentence.
