Can you update your phone to the latest version without it being rooted?

Nope because the recovery is still WIP. When it's ready a port of CM12 (5.0.X) will be made.

I just figured out where to find it on mine.

It says "Android Version 4.0.4"

Am I on the bleeding edge of mobile technology or what?

4.0.4 is ICS. Most smartphones with that version are single-core oldies with either Cortex-A5 or A8. 2.1 and older (PLUS 3.X Honeycomb) are deprecated though.

Darn. Oh well. On 4.4.4 I can see/use all the iPhone emoticons and that makes texting with iPhone people more fun. :P
