Do you think it's necessary or do you think it should be done away with? Why or why not?

This being 2021 I believe it should be completely be done away with considering we can now grow cultures which are far more accurate and closer to humans since they are closer to "real thing" being made of human cells.

Why test eye drops on a rabbit when you can do the same with eye tissue in a dish?

It should be done away with. Animal testing is cruel and inhumane and other research methods such as in vitro testing (tests done on human cells or tissue in a petri dish) offer opportunities to replace animal testing.

It's not even accurate so it's not like we are gaining anything out of it to even start with. It's like when the medical field were injecting rabbits at alarming rates just to "make sure" their medical instruments were safe.

Now think if they STILL did that today? The same thing is happening with every day products we buy though, shaving cream, make ups, lipsticks and even inhumane animal testing is done at pet food companies!

Oh and... ALL flea treatment plans, so if you own pets on them make sure you try to keep them at bay from the first place and use natural approaches before reaching for the store's shelves.

Given the times, it should be done away with. There are or should be better ways to test something.

There is no should because there most certainly are even if we are talking about finished animal foods, ethical voluntary trials (they functions like clinical trials for humans) are options and some brands do promote such as Primal (a raw pet food brand) if I am not mistaken. Cat in the Kitchen I believe also does this too.

In the medical context, they need to be used. If not, we cannot have the right medicines or treatments for certain diseases.
