Seattle Post-Intelligencer: Ann Rule, Northwest true crime master, dead at 83

Northwest true crime author Ann Rule has died.

Rule, 83, had been in declining health in recent years. She appears to have died Sunday night at a Seattle-area hospital.

Writing on Facebook, daughter Leslie Rule said her mother had been in intensive care with pneumonia. Rule, a Normandy Park resident, was hospitalized July 19 at Highline Medical Center outside of Seattle.

“My mom died peacefully last night,” Leslie Rule said on Facebook. “She had congestive heart failure and many other health issues.”

Rule, a onetime Seattle Police Department employee who turned to crime writing in the late 1960s, broke through with “The Stranger Beside Me,” a chilling account of her friendship with serial killer Ted Bundy. She has since authored two dozen books, and until recently could often be found at Washington courtrooms researching future works.
