Supporters of the hacktivist collective Anonymous have announced plans for a new social network after their Google+ accounts were shut down.

The new service, AnonPlus, will be free “of fear… of censorship… of blackout” and “for all people not just Anonymous”, according to its creators.

The project, currently a work in progress, was announced over the weekend after several pseudonymous Google+ account supporting Anonymous were shut down.

“As some of you know we got banned from Google+ due to some of our content,” said YourAnonNews, one of the affected accounts.

“What we didn't know at the time is that we were just one of a handful of Anonymous accounts that was [sic] silenced.”

“We've all heard the stories of activists being banned from Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and governments blocking their people from these sites as well through organised black outs.”

Like Facebook, Google+ requires users to register their real name to join.

Anonymous gained notoriety last year for its cyber attacks against PayPal and Visa, among others, in support of WikiLeaks. The self-styled “leaderless collective” was founded to battle perceived threats to freedom of speech and anonymity online. Dozens of alleged members of Anonymous have been arrested in international raids this year.

The holding page for AnonPlus claims 18 developers will work on the new project.

“This project is not overnight and will take many of those out there who simply want a better internet,” it says.

If the project comes to fruition, it will not be the first time an upstart social network has attempted to attract users away from the web giants with promises of greater privacy and freedom.
