Buckingham Palace has reacted with disappointment after The Sun published archive footage which appeared to show the Queen performing a Nazi salute.
In the footage, shot in 1933, the seven-year-old then princess can be seen giving the salute alongside the Queen Mother, Princess Margaret and Uncle Edward VIII.
Speaking last night, Buckingham Palace accused The Sun of having ‘exploited’ the footage.
‘It is disappointing that film, shot eight decades ago and apparently from her Majesty’s personal family archive, has been obtained and exploited in this manner’, a palace spokesman said.
But Labor MP Barbara Keeley was among hundreds of Twitter users who defended the monarch.
‘Hey @TheSun, if you want to stir up some moral outrage about a misjudgment in history, look a bit closer to home’, she wrote.
Twitter user Josh Cook added: ‘Horrible journalism. Pre-World War Two, before anybody knew anything about Nazi behavior. Totally taken out of context’.
And military historian James Holland claimed that the footage showed the Royals to be ‘human’.
‘They are all having a laugh, there are lots of smiles, so it’s all a big joke’, he told The Sun.
