Sometimes I wonder just how ignorant we are as Americans. There seems to be a general feeling that we are in our own bubble and don't give a flying fuck about anyone or anything else. This leads to stupidity and a lack of knowledge.

What are your opinions?

I am a american!

I care about others more than myself almost 80% of the time. So I wouldn't say all americans are stupid maybe some but not all.

There is stupid people everywhere. We have our fair share of them in the USA but to stereotype an entire nation and everyone in it is ignorant in itself. So those who think that all Americans are ignorant and stupid, are the ignorant and stupid ones.

That statement is a stupid stereotype. People say that, but look at what America has accomplished? Basically it is the greatest country to live on, on the planet Earth. Look at the trade industry of America, and everything that the country has accomplished. Other countries have accomplished great things as well, but America is the most stereotyped country of people.

Was that a joke?

-Polling data during and after last week’s midterm elections suggested that many Americans genuinely believe President Obama has raised their taxes -- even though the reality is that our president actually lowered them for most of us. This means that people trust pundits like Rush Limbaugh, a major force behind spreading that lie, over the numbers on their own tax returns.

-Another recent phenomenon? Half of new Congressmen don’t believe in the reality of global warming. It’s not that they don’t just disagree on the source or the severity of the problem. They flat out don’t think the world is getting warmer--despite the evidence outside their windows.

-The new Congress will probably try to restore millions of dollars of funding for scientifically inaccurate, largely disastrous abstinence-only curriculum in schools, many of which have been shown to spread lies like condoms don't work and abortion causes cancer.

-News outlets picked up a wildly inflated and completely outlandish claim from an Indian blog that Obama’s trip abroad cost $200 million a day--and listeners have swallowed it. (In this case, the White House flat-out denied it.)

~~~
Here's the good stuff
-Nearly one-fifth of Americans think Obama is a Muslim. Thanks, Fox news, for acting like this was a matter of opinion, not fact.
-25 percent of Americans don’t believe in Darwin’s theory of evolution while less than 40 percent do. Consider the fact that several of our newly elected officials, specifically newly elected Kansas Governor Sam Brownback, share that belief.
-Earlier this year, nearly 40 percent of Americans still believed the Sarah Palin-supported lie about death panels being included in health care reform.
-As of just a few years ago, about half of Americans still suspected a connection between Saddam Hussein and the attacks of September 11, a lie that was reinforced by none other than Dick Cheney.
-While a hefty amount of this demonstrable cluelessness gets better as the respondents get younger, all is not well in the below-30 demographic. A majority of “young Americans” cannot identify Iraq or Afghanistan--the places their peers are fighting and dying--on a map.
-Two out of five Americans, despite the whole separation of church and state being a foundation of our democracy thing, think teachers should be able to lead prayer in classrooms. So it seems those right-wingers clamoring to tear down the wall between church and state aren’t the only ones who don’t know their constitutional principles.
-Many Americans still believe in witchcraft, ESP and other supernatural phenomena. Does that explain why Christine O’Donnell was so quick to deny her “dabbling”?
-Speaking of antiquated religious beliefs, about a decade ago, 20 percent of Americans still believed that the sun revolves around the earth. That's just sad, considering that even the Vatican has let Galileo off the hook for being right.
-Only about half of Americans realize that Judaism is the oldest of the three monotheistic religions. Other examples of wild misunderstanding about religion and the separation of church and state can be found in this fall’s Pew survey on Americans’ religious knowledge.
We're not all stupid. A lot of Americans are, though, like Temerit just gave some facts on...
I still find it extremely funny that the Earth is getting hotter, and that is something that you can notice and observe and yet I'm one of the few in my school who believes it.
That reminds me, we had a geography quiz on Europe and over half the class failed. I was surprised that there was twelve people that didn't know where the UK is...
It's arrogant anyone would assume Americans are stupid, because that's nothing more than stereotypical beliefs, which are not supported. When you state Americans, plural form, meaning each American citizen in the United States, are stupid, you're arrogant for making such a generalization. It's far-fetched to say Americans are stupid, when the same stupid Americans are some of the same Americans who have invented and discovered some of the world's greatest inventions and accomplishments.
theres a big difference tween ignorance and stupidity............i think americans are ignorant but not any more stupid than any other nation
i honestly think most americans are totally unaware/dont care of what happens outside the country..............its a fact that something like 80% of americans never leave the country.............and i would guess the majority of the 20% left would be going to canada or mexico or are in the armed forces (and invading somewhere is a poor way of being a tourist
on my fave forum we are truely a global forum and have had this discussion a few times.......a lot of american members have actually said they feel more informed of the world cos they are involved in the forum..........one guy from virginia says he gets funny looks at work when he starts to talk about things like the Rugby World Cup or german politics or australian draught or british beer, etc etc etc............a lot have commented that that since american tv news is very blinkered they just dont get to hear about what is happening in other countries..........or when they do its a biased or condensed view
Do you have a source to that information? Even if it were true, it doesnt matter. I know several people who have traveled to Europe, Australia, Japan, Africa and various other places. They dont come back suddenly enlightened and any less ignorant than they were before they left.
i did have a source...........i remember looking up an official figure for how many americans have a passport the last time i was in a discussion about this
and if someone visits a foreign country and return without being less ignorant of that country then i would say they are either stupid or arrogant.......ive visited all sorts of countries and each one has increased my knowledge and 'enlightened' me................the muslim countries were the biggest eye openers to be honest.........and mexico too
Someone needs to be enlightened on how to use capital letters and proper punctuation.
I wouldn't say all Americans are stupid. But working where I do. I've come to learn that most people aren't all that smart or have common sense to use the other door.
I wouldn't go as far as to say he's stupid, but he is definitely animated. He's simply trying to surface a few laughs, and although some parts come off stereotypical, or perhaps offensive to some, in all honestly, I don't believe he was out to get anyone. Just looking to create some good, clean humor.
Are Americans stupid? No. Are there people in America who are stupid? Yes.
