Tell us what you think about antismoking ad campaigns. Are they effective? Do you think they might persuade teenagers either not to take up smoking or to quit? Do you know anyone who smokes? Why do you think millions of people (including millions of teenagers) continue to smoke even though the health risks are well known?

Yesterday I saw a study about this subject in my region:

Are they effective?
- Nope not at all.

Do you think they might persuade teenagers either not to take up smoking or to quit?
- After seeing the study on it....Nope

Do you know anyone who smokes?
- Yep a few.

Why do you think millions of people (including millions of teenagers) continue to smoke even though the health risks are well known?

- Good question that's why I quit 4 days ago ;)

Are they effective? No. Most people don't even pay attention to such ads.

Do you know anyone who smokes? Yes. A few of my friends smoke.

Why do you think millions of people (including millions of teenagers) continue to smoke even though the health risks are well known? Because smoking is very addictive. Plus, teenagers think they look 'cool' or older if they smoke.

They're not effective at all. Least of all for teenagers who feel the need to "rebel".

I smoke and so do a couple of my friends.

I know we all got hooked by first smoking weed. Once that became normal the step to normal cigarettes wasn't all that big.

I doubt antismoking campaigns are very effective... if anticursing compaigns are anything to go by :P
I also rather doubt that smokers seeing such a campaign would suddenly want to quit, by and large they probably know the dangers anyway.
Yeah, I know people who smoke and, like Jazzy said, they presumably continue because it's addictive. Why people start is a better question.

Y'know what's funny? Statistically speaking there're fewer smokers among the more highly educated, you can see the trend starting in secondary schools. That's how it is over here anyway, can anyone confirm?

When I was in school, it was mostly the rebellious, back-of-the-class kids who smoked. So yeah, I can confirm that.

Anti-smoking campaigns do not work. Kids get it when they learn not to smoke from a drug-prevention class called DARE (Drug & Alcohol Resistance Education), but when they become adults, they forget everything they learned as elementary kids and just light up a cigarette.

Are they effective? Heck no, they are not. Adults who smoke cannot help themselves but get addicted to it.

I've known many family members who smoke. I've smoked a half a pack of cigarettes in my lifetime and quit right away. My mum smoked until she quit due to hypothyroid disease in '98. My father smoked from young adulthood until a year before his death when he had pancreatitis. My sister currently smokes, and so does her husband. My uncle is a heavy smoker, about a pack a day smoker to be exact. My aunt and uncle currently smokes. My grandfather on my mum's side of the family quit smoking 27 years ago.

Teenagers and young adults need to not smoke. Either raise the US federal age limit for smoking to 21, or else ban tobacco.
