Well, it seems like nowadays cartoons can get away with a lot..

And I'm not referring to the cartoons that snuck in adult humor, to go along with the jokes for children...

What I remember back when Codename Kids Next Door and a few other programs were airing, you couldn't get away with much(exception to the rule is the Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy), which is actually a good thing.

Language was limited to heck, crud and other alternatives, sexual content was non-existant and the humor was a tad vulgar, but it didn't go too far and violence was relatively bloodless.

In fact Cartoon Network's [adult swim] block and a few other channels were about the only places you could find vulgar humor and stronger language, along some high, bloody violence.

Nowadays, that seems to have been all thrown out the window.

No longer are the mature jokes we couldn't get when we were younger hidden.

In fact, they're blatant, along with the fact that language is slightly stronger , along with the violence level raised up a notch.

I remember watching a cartoon called Regular Show once and I found it to be quite crude, considering that the your mom joke is taken to a further level.

A bird and raccoon manage to tick off a guy, who might as well be obese and he shows them a picture of his mother, forcing them to apparently kiss it and then to eat it.

Now it seems like typical bullying at first, but then the guy(Muscle Man) reveals that it's just a picture of his buttocks with a face drawn on it.

After seeing that, I decided that it's better to avoid such a show.

I mean I don't mind a little toilet humor and I like dark humor, but that's taking it a little further than a simple flatuence joke.

I don't believe I'll really be tuning to watch that show again.

I mean, it fits better on [adult swim] or at a later time slot.

On the other hand, I like Adventure Time, as it has some adult humor mixed in with the childish antics of a boy and his magical dog, which is remiscent of the old Spongebob episodes.

Plus, the toilet humor doesn't go too far either.

Now while some of this is okay for us adults and older adolescents, I don't think little kids should be watching these kind of cartoons nowadays, just let them watch Looney Tunes or better yet, just let them play outside.

Cartoons are becoming more vulgar, yes. Let me refer to this post:

In the late Sixties when the Archie comics which had been produced since the early 40's were being brought to TV on CBS, the networks Standards and Practices office, read censors were concerned that if the two guitar players in the Archies group wore their guitars low slung like real groups that it would be 'suggestive'. If you look at the rock music groups of the time... yeah, you can almost see their point.

The same dilema was faced by the comic books decades before, and generally played down, if you look at the old magazines, their instruments tend to wander up and down, evidently as it suited the artists or the various publishers at the time.

But it became a serious issue when the characters were actually moving and strumming the guitars. So the producers of the show jacked the guitars up to comical levels, in some songs the thing is almost hitting Archie's chin while he sings, and left them.
That should paint a clear picture of how far we've come... For better or for worse.

I'm pretty sure cussing in general has become more usual in real life as well.

Keeping that in mind, I see no real reason to prevent kids from watching something purely because it contains bad language they're going to hear anyway. I could sort of agree with preventing them from watching things because it's just plain crap...

From what I've seen shows like that Adventure Time show and Regular Show definitely don't contain age-appropriate material. This is provided that small children are even capable of grasping the innuendos and euphemisms.

However I disagree that it's a recent thing that cartoons are becoming that way. From my point of view, cartoons were just as vulgar when I was growing up.

Courage the Cowardly Dog was nightmarish.

Spongebob is way more tame now. Before, it used to be riddled with adult humor and innuendos. Now it is just plain slapstick.

Ren and Stimpy was a good example of a quintessential cartoon paving the way for the cartoons of today, yet Ren and Stimpy was so incredibly vulgar and inappropriate for kids.

I don't even need to mention The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy - to this day, I don't know how some of the content on that show was allowed to slip past the radars and be shown to children.

Cartoons back then got away with a lot..

I disagree, as Spongebob was actually better with the adult humor.

Now recent episodes feel low-quality to me.

You also forgot Invader ZIM too and I got away with watching The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy when I was a bit younger.

Probably the show that might have got into dark humor and black comedy.

Adventure Time is bit more tame than Regular Show in my pinion, as Regular Show is a immature with it's humor, compared to Adventure Time, which is meant to remind people of their childhood Saturday morning cartoons.(I, however was stuck anime, rather.)

Ren and Stimpy is stupidly hilarious in my opinion, though.

About SpongeBob, it sucks now. The new writers now exaggerate each character's trait, whereas the old writers didn't. They kept the characters fresh.

Anyway, with that said, I love Adventure Time AND Regular Show. Vulgar or not, it's my opinion that they're bringing back quality old school cartoon entertainment, now that Courage, Johnny Bravo, Dexter's Laboratory, and so many other great shows are now absent, replacing them with mostly mediocre cartoons. (Gumball? Seriously?)

Archie was marketed to children and teens.

There were self proclaimed adult comics at the time, and have been since the advent of mass publishing. And there were some that danced back and forth across the line from the teen audience to adults.

Does anybody else remember the Heavy Metal comic book from the seventies and the movies from the eighties?

Probably not.

Also blurring the line were publications like MAD and Cracked and their various knockoffs.

Yes, the language used was still fairly 'clean' by today's standards, but at the time, they routinely pushed the envelope, and sometimes crossed the line either with innuendo or directly with their subject matter and its presentation.

If you are just talking about being gross, with pointless vulgar humor.... well, there has always been the 'underground' market with its selection of, basically, crap.

As for a cable networks idea of what should be depicted on a 'cartoon' show. Fox lowered that bar into the basement with Bart Simpson's first eat my shorts comment to his father.

From there, the only place left to take it was into the septic tank.

And who to blame? Hummmmm...

No one... or, if you prefer, everyone.

RE: Are today's cartoons becoming more vulgar

I blame everyone. I'm really starting to make plans that my children won't be allowed to watch regular tv and I'll just buy the seasons of cartoons I've deemed appropriate for them to watch.

RE: Are today's cartoons becoming more vulgar

I don't think so. Cartoons 20 years ago had many innuendos back then too. I think the reason we as adults think cartoons are getting more vulgar is because we can now actually understand the jokes.

RE: Are today's cartoons becoming more vulgar

I hardly ever watch cartoons, but man are they getting worse as time flies? Swearing, violence, suggestive themes, professional stunts...you betcha. That is why I matured out of it.

RE: Are today's cartoons becoming more vulgar

I can't help but think back to Animaniacs, and all of the shit that they got away with saying. I think that cartoons have always had underlying themes in-order to make themselves enjoyable for older audiences as well.

...and its creator got subsequently fired from Nickelodeon. Seriously, why the fuck was that lame excuse of a cartoon allowed to exist? :@

Anyway, I have no personal say on this subject, as I never really watched cartoons in my lifetime.
