Church ministers and 90-year-old man arrested for feeding the homeless
Your thoughts on this new ordinance?
A 90-year old man and two church ministers are facing up to 60 days in jail after being arrested for feeding the homeless.
The three men, including homeless advocate Arnold Abbott, 90, and church pastor Wayne Black, were arrested by Fort Lauderdale police for violating a new ordinance that effectively outlaws groups from sharing food with the hungry.
And the men now face a possible 60 days in prison and a $500 fine for their acts of kindness.
‘One of the police officers came over and said “Drop that plate right now,” as if I was carrying a weapon,’ said Mr Abbott, who prepares hundreds of meals a week for the Sanctuary Church homeless kitchen.
The new ordinance, branded ‘atrocious,’ by one local advocate, limits where groups can set up sites to feed the hungry on public property by requiring them to secure permission from property owners and provide portable toilets for events.
And Mayor Jack Seiler stated his intention to take the new ordinance seriously, adding that arrests would be coming.
‘We enforce the laws here in Fort Lauderdale,’ he warned.
