Do think admin's should hire those who ask to be promoted to a moderator or admin? What if this person wasn't even a member and asked via Email?

Do you think admin's should hire active existing members?

They have to be objective as Smooth said. It helps if they are an active, registered member. Most of all they have to be qualified for the position (the proof is in the pudding).

However I feel they have to be ambitious and outgoing enough to want the position, though.

There is nothing wrong with a long term member asking for a staff position. If someone has been around a while then you will know what they are all about and the risk of a bad hire is much lower. However, someone just coming up to you out of the blue who asks for a job should not get one. You are just asking for problems from letting a lazy bum looking for a title onto your forum's staff team to a guy whose goal is to ruin the place. It's just not worth it.

Just because a member is an active existing member does not mean they are good choices for promotion to moderator or admin. The admin of any forum should know through the quality of activity and attitude of members which ones would qualify as good candidates. I also think that staff should have their input as to which member the admin is considering promoting. All staff have to work as a team and one bad choice affects the whole team.

That too...

But all in all, just try to use your best judgement...

Worst comes to worst, you give 'em the boot.

I guess the advantage of them asking is that you know they're interested.

Doesn't mean you don't still have to judge them by character and whatnot. It's quite similar to picking members from the forum, except they ask first.

What Smooth said always applies, no matter where you may get your staff.

I've been staff. It ain't all some people think it is. And when done right, it can be a LOT of work. And it is usually thankless. You'll end up pissing somebody off that will spend the next six months crying, or be the owner's cousin and you'll end up getting sacked for it. And in the end, all you'll have for your trouble is migraines and a burned out monitor.

So now, if it is mentioned to me, I quote a general.

If nominated I will not run; if elected I will not serve.

While it might be a thankless job, I don't do it for the thanks. I do it to make the community a better place. I enjoy it very much and it's worth my time and energy if I can help members or staff. Yes, along the way you will find members that for what ever reason don't like you because you are enforcing the rules. Thank goodness, here at Off Topix, I've only run into a couple of them. If as staff you treat members the way you want to be treated, all works out in the end.

Pretty much sums up my thoughts too. I treat members the same no matter what their ranking. Everyone is equal. I like to be treated like that too, even being a mod. I don't want people to think of me differently, just because there's a thing or two more I am able to do. Yes, am able to, not necessarily will, or can. I just clean up bots, and make sure stuff doesn't get out of hand.

When I did administrate forums, I always asked people to be mods, the reverse would have been ignored. I mean, if they are a good member, they have just as good of likelihood of being a mod without asking. It's not like I forget to fill staff vacancies.

Where at?

It was back in the days of dialup BBS's.

And it is a long story that involves a radio station, a bucket of fried chicken, White House press credentials, a Packard Bell 486 computer that may have been demonically possessed, the (now defunct) Slam Dunk to the Beach HS Basketball Tournament, and a Hooter's restaurant.

Personally, I only hire staff by posting a Now Hiring thread and seeing the responses. I will select the best suited candidate.

That's an interesting way to get staff. Personally, I agree with Smooth.

In my opinion, the best mods out there are the ones who don't want it in the first place.
