Do atheists have a moral obligation to criticize & scrutinize religion or should they tolerate it as important part of many people's lives?

I'll say they should deal with it and accept that there are some people that are not gonna jump ship and convert to Atheism. I say that all the time. I was born a Christian and I will die one. (Not trying to start anything, but that's just my opinion.)

I'd say this goes for any religion. In a perfect world, we could all respect one another as long as it doesn't intrude on the health and well-being of humans, no infringing on life or property, etc. In this case, who gives a shit what someone else believes? Why does it matter to you so much? Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Scientologist, Cthulhu, Satan--whatever it is you want to believe in--no one has an obligation to say or do anything to anyone in regards to religion, and in that case I don't believe they have a right.

People's religious or non religious beliefs should be kept to themselves. The world would be a much better place if all did that

I am a atheist but embrace the idea that the country and state I live in were founded on religion. I have just integrated my atheism with Christianity.

Seconding this. Forget my dumb idea.

They have the same moral obligation as a religious person does to criticise another's faith.

...which is none.

free speech is an illusion to try to make people think they have freedoms and rights when they are more slaves then anything else...

what @fantanoice is saying is that both religious and non-religious people shouldn't criticize anyone else's faith or beliefs, because it's morally wrong... why would you disagree with that?

The question I would pose first is this... What authority would this moral obligation come from? As far as I can tell, an atheist can not answer this with anything that would have the authority to impose this moral obligation on anyone so no they have no moral obligation to criticize or scrutinize religion. They might call it a personal preference to go out and do this but they cannot say it's a moral obligation for an atheist to criticize and scrutinize religion because there is nothing to which this moral obligation would come from that has the authority to dictate this obligation.

People should be able to discuss and debate beliefs and views, but what is needed is respect and tolerance for others beliefs.
The debates should be for better understanding and not trying to convince each other who is right and who is wrong.
