Do you have these on your forums? If you register on a forum and you get one, do you read it or just automatically delete it? What are your thoughts on these?

If all it says is Welcome <username> to <name of forum> then it annoys me.

But if it contains more information about what the unique features are and how to use them etc, then I don't mind them.

I at least view the private message so it no longer shows up as new. I'm weary of them, in any case, because they don't contain anything useful the overwhelming majority of the time. Also, they much remind me of those birthday e-mails, in that all they signify is that the Internet knows what you did.

Anyways, I don't have these on my forum. The important topics are either already included in the menu, or are within the first two forums near the top of the forum listing. Additionally, important topics are mentioned and linked to in the guest welcome message, and the rules are on the agreement page shown before the registration form. .

Kevin

You should add that to your signature.

No worries; I'll keep it out of the posts.

— I almost added it again.

I'm not asking you to stop, it was merely a suggestion. It doesnt bother me.

Oh. I'm glad. It's a habit, and I like it because it sounds gentlemanly. I'd like to include it in my real signature, but I'd also like to keep my advertisements right next to the divider.

Thanks for letting me keep it.

Regards,

Kevin

Anywho.. When I register on a forum, the 1st thing I want to do is add in my signature and avatar. Instant new PM notifications get in the way of that. That just might be me being nit picky though.

I feel the same way, hence me wanting to mark a PM as read asap.

I never got a welcome PM but I have gotten a welcome email. To me it's annoying and I just delete it.

Depending on whether I know the new member or not, I do send a welcome pm, but it does contain some useful info etc and they are definitely not automated.

Whether they get read is another matter and it doesn't really bother me if they don't.

Personally, when I join a new forum and get a welcome pm, I do give it a quick look over, just in case it contains anything useful.

I've been on several forum's where they have one, but there's nothing in it :-/ I wouldn't mind them if they were informative, but I'm more inclined to mark it read and forget about it until I clear out my PM box

I don't like them, unless they contain some nice information.

A forum I go to would send them out manually, and every one of them would be different, and it would say different stuff about the forum

They were cool, but the people got lazy and stopped sending them.

I have them on my forum. It basically welcomes them to the forum, introduces them to some of the features and points them in the right direction if they need any help or have any questions/suggestions. A few go unread but I've also had quite a few replies thanking me for the welcome and saying how they like the site etc.

I never read them (unless the forum is SMF, in which case the body of the PM gets emailed to me, which I'll read). They just get deleted.

I have different feelings about this. I don't mind welcome PM's but to be perfectly honest, I don't like them either. Especially if the PM in question has something like, read the rules, please or something along those lines. So really, I have mixed feelings about them.

I usually look at it once and forget about it so don't care if a board has them or not but never really found them necessary in the ways they got used.
