A New Zealand baby was left inside a locked car outside a supermarket with a note saying to ââ¬Åcall mother if I need anything.ââ¬Â
A photo of the sleeping baby with the note sparked public and online outrage.
The baby was left in the car at the Pakââ¬â¢nSave in Porirua on Saturday, reported Stuff.co.nz. The infant was wrapped in a blanket and had a cap on.
Porirua Police Senior Sergeant Justin Rakena said his office cannot do anything about it because no complaints have been lodged.
ââ¬ÅWe were never called at the time, so weââ¬â¢ve got nothing to go on. Weââ¬â¢d look at it like we look at anything,ââ¬â¢ he said.
Rakena said that children being left in cars is commonplace in the area. ââ¬ÅThis is quite common, and quite often thereââ¬â¢s an innocent explanation. At a guess Iââ¬â¢d say 95 percent of these things can be explained away,ââ¬Â he said.
But a local man told the New Zealand Herald that he saw the baby with the note after he parked next to the car.
ââ¬ÅWe waited there for a little bit, wondering if the mum was just going to be two seconds and come back. And my wife said, ââ¬ËIââ¬â¢m not going in without someone being here with the baby,ââ¬â¢Ã¢â¬Â the man, who was not identified, told the the paper.
New Zealand mother Kim Howan told 3News: ââ¬ÅI actually think itââ¬â¢s quite terrible. Iââ¬â¢ve got four in there, not my own, but took them in, just to get bacon. It takes 20 minutes longer, but theyââ¬â¢re safe.ââ¬Â
Sue Campbell, the Plunket national child safety adviser, told the Herald that leaving a baby in a car unattended is problematic.
ââ¬ÅBabies can dehydrate quickly and become very distressed. So for a newborn thatââ¬â¢s one of the key issues. Plus thereââ¬â¢s a security issue--a small baby is unable to defend itself if need be, or call for help, or anything like that,ââ¬Â she said.
A photo of the baby was posted on radio personality Polly Gillespieââ¬â¢s Facebook page. Many of the comments expressed outrage.

But another New Zealand mother, Danielle Crooks, said, ââ¬ÅShe did the best she thought in the situation by leaving a note,ââ¬Â according to 3News. ââ¬ÅThereââ¬â¢s probably plenty of kids that get left in the car that you donââ¬â¢t know about without notes.ââ¬Â

Guess they'll do something when they find a dead baby left alone in a car. This is just unbelievable!
