New Zealand officials have released a list of baby names put forward by parents that were rejected because they were too bizarre or offensive. Read full article.

Reading this, I have a question to all of you.

Question: Do you think a government has the right to tell parents what they can or cannot name their child?

Yes. If the parents are too stupid to come up with a sensible name then it is up to the government to put a stop to it. The child is likely to be teased about their name if it's something like "4Real" or whatever which could lead to serious events like, self harm, suicide etc

I think if the name is completely ridiculous, they should have official legal staff to go around and literally smack some sense into dumb parents.

Yes, if someone wants to change their own name to something that stupid, fine, but that should be their choice.
wanting to call the latest addition to the family simply "2nd", "3rd" or "5th".
Romans did it.

Part of the issue is that they're naming someone else who isn't them. If these parents want weird names, they should change their own names to whatever they want. I mean, it's the parents' own lives to worry about if the parents want to change their personal names, and their responsibility.

However, subjecting another human being to weird names just because the parent so desires is, in my opinion, a personal violation, and as has already been mentioned, leads to the child being made fun of, or even worse.

I agree, the parents themselves should legally change their own names to some bizarre whatever
I bet some of these parents actually do have psychological problems and a name like 24dominos~pizza could seem perfectly normal to them.. Like they are hearing the name "John" or something.
