A SYDNEY man who hit a baby with a crutch before almost cutting her head off with a meat cleaver has been found not guilty of her murder on the grounds of mental illness.

After Justice Robert Shadbolt Hulme delivered his verdict in the New South Wales Supreme Court today, Jayant Kumar Singh said from the dock: I am very sorry for what I have done.

The judge found that Mr Singh, who had recently been released from a mental health facility, killed the nine-month-old girl in front of her two young siblings on December 22, 2006, at a house in Campsie, in Sydney's southwest.

A post-mortem report revealed the baby had brain injuries and extensive fractures to her skull, and her neck had been cut deeply with near decapitation.

Mr Singh had been babysitting the three children.

Their mother said he had never shown any aggression towards them and had a good relationship with the baby.

The judge ordered Mr Singh to be detained in a prison hospital at Sydney's Long Bay Jail until released by due process of the law.

How ridiculous. People can get away with anything and blame it on mental illness

Yeah i am sure saying you're sorry makes up for everything he did....[/sarcasm]

Why is this guy not in jail and how in the hell didn't anyone notice he wasn't alright upstairs?

He clearly acknowladged what he had done. I don't see why this guy got off

Who the heck okayed his release from a mental health facility? This is the person responsible for letting this mental sicko back out into society.

Can you imagine the trauma this has put on the two young siblings who watched him do this. Those poor children will never be the same. The mother should have these children taken away from her for letting this man into their lives.

Seriously? Got free because of mental illness? That's the worst excuse I've ever heard for saying that someone's not guilty after almost cutting someones head off
