Recently in my classroom, our Vice Principle has enforced a strict policy that no student is allowed to bring backpacks into the classroom. The students do not agree with this policy saying that it allows for a more smoother transition from class to class due to having all of the materials with them. I for one is against this policy because it is a lot easier to carry everything with you that way you have everything you need for each class you have. Do you think it should be enforced? Maybe only seniors get to bring their bags to class? Tell me what you think!

Did the Vice Principle give the reason(s) for this new policy?

Well, that means very little to me, but I know we couldn't go without bags here. Except in primary school.

Not really, she was quite vague when she announced it. She is walking into the classrooms and pointing out students with bags and making the students put them in their lockers.

Well, we do have a lot of textbooks that we have to carry and the materials to do the classes. I mean freshman dont have that difficult of classes, but when you get up to where I am, it does.

Maybe she's afraid there could be weapons in the bags or perhaps the bags themselves could be used as weapons?

Yeah, I mean we go to a upscale school so there isn't that big of a threat of weapons(not saying there isn't) but the chances of anything happening to that extreme is really small. I think it is a little controlling to where we can't bring our backpacks to class, but oh well, I only have a few more months until im out for good

Impossible, because I keep my machete in my backpocket!

In Baltimore city schools there are metal detectors and your bags are checked before you enter class. There are guards that are fully armed throughout school (I know there's a couple in the cafeteria, one in the main entrance, one in the gym, etc.)

But then again, that's Baltimore. Your school experiences probably differ from mine.

I personally feel safer when I'm in class with people who do not have their backpack on them. Simply because anything can become a weapon - from umbrellas to nylon cord. We had a student that stabbed and nearly killed another student with a pencil, so there really is no such thing as too careful.

This is a bit ironic because my school did the opposite and did away with lockers.

We have a fully armed city police officer at our school, but he is just there for a presence. He doesnt do anything because where I go to school, it's really upscale, so he is just there for help with troubled students. And if something does start, like a shoving match, once is presence is known, everything is a standstill

Then I can't think of any reason why your principal would be spurred to go through with this change. From what I hear, there's not much history of violent students and the area seems relatively safe (although you can never be too careful these days).

If they give the seniors privilege to carry backpacks, then some would claim it's unfair. Although I do think this is a nicer idea since obviously the higher grades have more materials. Either that or they should allow for more time to go to your locker and transition between classes.

Yeah, she is really power hungry and no one likes her, nor really respects her for that matter.

Nah. I had more subjects in my first year of middle school than in my last year of high school (high and middle school are one school here).

With that kind of a decision, its easy to see why.
