Bad grammar & spelling

Do you have issues with people on forums who have bad grammar or spelling? Does it bother you more when forum staff do it?

Mistakes in a correction directed at another member are also annoying.

Serious arguments where every second word is misspelt aren't usually worth reading either...

It bugs me a lot. There's no excuse for bad grammar or spelling. The majority of web browsers have in-buiilt spellchecker functions, and you can quite easily find the word you want just by typing it into Google or something similar. It's not hard, and I don't see why some people are so lazy they don't bother.

An occasional typo is one thing. They happen. We'll get over it.



Intentional misspelling along the lines of using textisms when you have a full keyboard in front of you means you don't want me reading what you wrote.

You can't always judge people because of bad grammar & spelling. There are people with disabilities that come across as illiterate when in fact they are not. I knew a member on another forum who is paralyzed from the neck down. He types with his eyes. When he was very tired, he would post like someone drunk would. People made fun of him. That was until he finally told them about his condition.



The one thing I cannot tolerate are members who use text abbreviations. I refuse to even read their post.

How can you tell the difference?

I'm an English major and I don't really have a problem with it. Rather, I find it funny. What I do have a problem with is when people who write in bad grammar ignorantly hate or debate, because they literally have no sense arguing if they can't write properly. And if I can't read it, that's also bad.

In a forum like this, all you have is your words, and their presentation as we cannot see your facial expression and hear your tone of voice.



If the way your words appear on the screen detracts from the overall meaning, you've already lost half of what you're trying to say.

I think texting has a lot to do with it. Text messaging has killed our sanity of the English language.

The only thing I find is that no one knows the difference between Your and You're as well as To and Too, it drives me nuts but I don't say anything.

I understand that there are people out there who have disabilities and difficulties. Unfortunately, WAY more people than they write as if they never got further than 2nd grade English.

I've seen some of the worst examples right here on Off Topix.

ANY word that ends in an s is given an apostrophe. WRONG!!

The word allowed spelled aloud. WRONG!

The TWO words of a lot spelled as one word: alot. Check the dictionary; alot is not in there.

The words to, too and two being interchanged in any which way. WRONG!

The inability to tell the difference between their, they're and there. Not interchangeable, people!!

People saying I should OF when the proper word is I should HAVE. The contractions of should've and could've don't mean should or could OF!! That one seriously bugs me.

Everyone makes typos. But there is a huge difference between the occasional typo like that, and consistently writing your text incorrectly. Not for one second do I believe that the people who make these mistakes (and they ALWAYS make them) have a reading or writing disability.

A. There are too many of them here and

B. People are just lazy and don't care to learn how to write properly.

There have been enough of these threads here for people to learn where they are making these mistakes. And honestly, I don't take seriously those people who can't learn the correct way to write. You're too lazy to learn the right way to spell things and how to use proper grammar? I don't have time to try to figure out what the hell you're trying to say.

Sorry but I actually find your post quite offensive (not that you probably care) But having quite bad dyslexia I often get these examples muddled up. I am NOT lazy and I do care to not get on the bad side of grammer nazi's

I stick to this original statement I made. For crap sake we are all from different walks of life and different educational backgrounds. To judge someone on their spelling and grammar is like judging a book you've never read. Get over it is what I say.
