What was the best book you were forced to read in school?

a tie between

Orwell's 1984

and

The Jungle by Upton Sinclair

And, of all the assigned reading I did all the way from grade school into college, those are the only two I remember reading all the way through.

I mean, come on, did ANYBODY, Anywhere, EVER completely read Buddenbrooks by Thomas Mann? I distinctly remember writing the book report doing a in depth analysis of a conversation I found on a random page in the middle of the thing, and got a pretty good grade too. I'm not sure I ever made it through the first chapter.

Did you know that this book is the highest grossing book ever for royalties, and it is the only book the author ever wrote. It is studied in almost every school you can think of. So every years hundreds of thousands of students go out and buy new copies.

To Kill a Mockingbird for me as well.

I picked it out of a bunch for my Yr 9 Lit class.
