(Sky News) Biden pardons black leader who inspired future activists
In one of his final acts as president before handing the reins to Donald Trump, Joe Biden has posthumously pardoned Marcus Garvey.
Garvey, who influenced Malcolm X and other civil rights leaders, was convicted of mail fraud in the 1920s. He was then deported to Jamaica, where he was born, dying in 1940.
Supporters have pushed for Biden to pardon Garvey, arguing his conviction was a politically motivated effort to silence the increasingly popular leader who spoke of racial pride.
Martin Luther King Jr said Garvey was "the first man, on a mass scale and level" to give millions of black people "a sense of dignity and destiny".
