(The Guardian) Biden plans primetime speech on threats to democracy
Joe Biden will this evening make a speech on threats to democracy, days after an attack on the residence of the speaker of the House and as Americans prepare to cast ballots in next week’s midterms.

The Associated Press reports the president will speak at 7 pm eastern time at a venue near the Capitol, which was stormed by rioters incited by Donald Trump during the January 6 insurrection.

Biden “will be very clear tonight that he is speaking to people who don’t agree with him on any issues, who don’t agree on his agenda, but who really can unite behind this idea of this fundamental value of democracy,” White House senior adviser Anita Dunn said today during an event hosted by Axios. She added that the speech is “from Capitol Hill, because that is where there was an attempt to subvert our democracy.”

Democrats are in a tough battle to hold on their majorities in the House and Senate in Tuesday’s midterm elections. The Republican party, which is fielding several candidates who have refused to say if they will accept the election result and others who took part in the January 6 riot, is seen as likely to retake the House and potentially also the Senate.
In his speech this evening, PBS NewsHour reports Joe Biden will address the attack on Paul Pelosi, husband of Democratic House speaker Nancy Pelosi, who was assaulted by an intruder in their San Francisco home last week.

One, no one deserves to be attacked in their own home no matter how bad their political or religious views are. Two, I don't care what Biden has to say. I'm sure his statement will be as dull and meaningless as usual.

So in other words, he is going to stand in front of a podium and read some remarks written by someone else that are broadcasted on a teleprompter and somehow stumble through it all while making several gaffes, and this is somehow going to benefit him and the party. IF there is one thing anyone can agree on is at least when Trump spoke, you were convinced he really believed what he believed on any given topic. You honestly can't say the same for Biden because of his constant use of teleprompters and his inability to not make gaffes through every single speech he gives.

All this is being done to redirect the conversation away from the economy and all the other failures of the Democrats but I doubt it is going to work. He is also going to try to convince the public that he attack on Paul Pelosi was poliitcal when it looks to me this was just a case of an insane man doing irrational things because he wasn't put into a asylum a long time ago for the medically ill.

Oh I forgot; as long as people got a little scratch in their pockets then who cares if American democracy goes through the shitter.

Thanks for clarifying that for us, BZ.

(The Guardian) Last night, Joe Biden gave an address warning of dire consequences if voters elect Republican extremists to office next Tuesday. Today, he’s heading west to campaign not in the tightest contests or those considered the best chances to oust sitting Republicans, but rather for incumbent Democrats trying to hang on to their seats.

It’s the perfect illustration of the dynamic for Biden, more than a year after his approval ratings tanked and stayed there. His presidential bully pulpit allowed him to make a speech where he warned, “Make no mistake, democracy is on the ballot for all of us.” But his unpopularity had forced him into a cautious approach to campaigning – almost a tacit admission that when it comes to the races that could define the next two years of his presidency, his ability to help is limited.

The Associated Press today published a piece looking at what today’s travel itinerary says about the dynamic. Here’s how they put it: His itinerary illustrates the limited political clout of a president who has been held at arm’s length by most Democrats in tough races this cycle. It also suggests that the president, whose approval rating remains underwater, has concluded that he can be most effective using the waning days before polls close to shore up support for Democratic candidates in areas that he easily won in 2020.
Stepping away for a minute from its context in relation to the midterms, here’s what University of Chicago political violence expert Robert A. Pape had to say about the substance of Biden’s speech last night: The data shows that President Biden is right: The violent threat to our democracy comes from an extreme minority— not just a minority of all Americans but a minority of even pro-Trump Republicans. Our national survey from September shows that an estimated 13 million adults support the use of force for Trump. That means well over 80% of Americans, both Democrats and most Republicans, reject violence for political reasons. Bipartisan majority opposes political violence. Now it is crucial to turn that democratic majority into a bipartisan coalition against political violence.

Oh I forgot; as long as people got a little scratch in their pockets then who cares if American democracy goes through the shitter.

Money talks and bullshit walks.
