Books based on TV Shows and films

What do you think about books that are based on TV Shows and films? Do you think they give anything to the Shows an films?

I think sometimes they can give something to the show or film only if they're written by someone who knows or has done a lot of research, but I detest books that just copy the events that happen in the show or the film.

Isn't the other way round a lot more common?
Can't really remember seeing a lot of these... Or any, really.

Do you mean novels based on episodes (or the entire series) by writers from the show or "Fan Fiction" which introduces characters or situations not seen on the show but within the same 'universe'?
