A teenager who microwaved his brother's hamster has been sent to a young offenders' institution for four months, the RSPCA said.



The 16-year-old boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, was also banned at Kettering Youth Court from keeping animals for four years, the animal welfare charity added.



It said the one-year-old female golden hamster had to be put down after suffering severe burns. One of its feet was burnt through to the bone.



The boy, from the Corby area of Northamptonshire, threatened to microwave his brother's hamster before he placed it in the cooker in March last year.



The boy pleaded guilty to one count of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal at a court hearing in January.



RSPCA inspector Clint Davies said afterwards: This is an extremely shocking case. I don't think we can have any idea how much pain an animal goes through when it's put in a microwave and cooked alive.



This hamster's leg was burned to a crisp and as microwaves cook from the inside, the organ damage to this tiny animal must have been horrific.



It would take more than a few seconds to burn the leg right down to the bone.

This is shocking and I can't imagine how scared that hamster felt. Unfortunatly, going to a young offender's institute may not actually teach the boy that animals have feelings and are just as important as humans

It's obvious to me that he has mental issues and should have been locked up in a psychiatric hospital that specialize in the treatment of serious mental disorders.

My cousin microwaved a kitten before but nothing happened to him.. Well besides the family being disgusted in him and really angry. In fact people still bring it up today even though it happened like 15 years ago.

That's totally uncalled for and is a completely twisted thing to say. No one deserves to be raped no matter what their crime. If you think that equals some kind of justice then you're the one in need of serious help.

I understand why what has happened would disgust you, as it would any animal lover and there really isn't any excuse for what the boy did.



However, there's a world of difference between one malicious act of cruelty and a person becoming a serial killer.There is also no evidence that the boy has mental problems, though I'm sure that possibility will have been looked into.



Don't let your emotions run away with your ability to think straight.



I have known several people in my life who I don't think are fit to care for animals or anything else for that matter and some of the stuff they have done appals me. But to the best of my knowledge, none of them have gone on to become serial killers and not all of them had a mental illness either.

Well, Jazzy is right, a lot of sociopaths start out with arson and torturing/killing animals when they're young. That doesn't mean everyone that harms an animal will go to kill someone, but still, if someone microwaves an animal they need to be subjected to thorough psych evaluations at the very least. In my opinion, four months is like a slap on the wrist. That's like a vacation. I would have given him no less than one year, and that's taking into account how lenient our legal system is on animal abusers (not sure about the UK, but it looks they are about the same).
