my sect has always opposed zionism and a jewish state in israel on the grounds that it's halachically forbidden (hebrew law is called halacha) and that supremacist militant nationalism is anathema to the hebrew faith. the chosen people thing is supposed to be about us being an example to the gentiles by our righteousness, not the strength of our military in seizing and holding land.

as an american, i am opposed to theocracies of any stripe and support the reunification of palestine into a secular republic with the jewish state contained inside no more than the 1967 borders with the muslims in control of gaza. the other two states, judea and samaria should be secular.

the international BDS movement is gaining momentum, with many politicians coming out in support of it, celebrities and academics refusing to play or give lectures in israel and nations divesting themselves of israeli investment properties and cancelling contracts with israeli companies. sodastream and other israeli manufacturers are reporting reduced earnings already.

so is israel an apartheid state or not? by what right does israel exist? that a bunch of industrialists claiming to speak for jews bought a bunch of politicians to allocate land in palestine for them to take away from the people already living there?

because the jews need and deserve a homeland? that line of reasoning doesn't conform with tradition and is at the root of the conflict between judaism and zionism. we weren't supposed to do it without the messiah.

i may have posted this here already. it's a speech by alison weir, an american historian who is probably the leading authority on the us-israel relationship.
