A pup known as Britain's saddest dog now has a new leash on life after making a miracle recovery.

When the dog, known as Princess, was taken in by an animal shelter near Edenfield, Lancashire, in December, it was 6 months old but way behind its puppy peers in terms of development.

According to the Daily Mirror, Princess did not know how to play and had never been cuddled.

Even worse: Even though the abandoned dog is believed to be a Staffordshire bull terrier-greyhound cross, it looked more like a Mexican hairless, thanks to a terrible case of mange.

The staff at Bleakholt Animal Sanctuary say she was brought in by the skin of her teeth and that Princess would have most likely died from the harsh winter had she not been rescued.

Her condition was so bad that she could not go outside in any weather, and just wearing a warm jacket would irritate her skin.

Although the cost for treating her condition was estimated in the five-figure range, donations to save her skin have poured in from all over the world.

Now she is back in fighting shape, according to sanctuary manager Neil Martin.

She was the saddest-looking dog we have ever seen, he said. Now all they want is to find her a home fit for a Princess.
