British Petroleum is an international oil and gas company. BP stock was consistently trading above $60 per share until the oil spill in the gulf of Mexico occurred on April 20, 2010. BP shares sank to their lowest levels in 13 years as U.S. lawmakers pressed the British oil company to halt its dividend payments and fork out more compensation for damage caused by the massive Gulf of Mexico oil spill. 52 days later, BP is lost $90 billion in market share and has yet to contain the catastrophic spill. The cost of the cleanup and containment efforts has now hit $1.43 billion. Let me remind you that a) the leak hasn’t been stopped,

they are facing lawsuits, and c) BP has to clean up the mess after the well is sealed.

No. If they go bankrupt they wont be able to afford to clean up the mess!

I saw a wonderful product which cleans up oil spills. It was invented a few years ago but not capitalised on. It seems ridiculous to me that you have a product which will clean this oil up and then you don't invest in the product!

I understand that the oil may float at different depths in the water due to different densities in the oil (I think that was the reason), but even if only the surface oil can be cleared it would be a help.

The other problem is that much of the clean up involves using detergents to clean up both seashore and wildlife. Oil is biodegradable and will eventually break down in the sea water and be reabsorbed, whereas the detergents used are non-biodegradable and will cause a great deal of further damage to the environment, particularly in the volumes used.

Sealife, for instance, the birds feathers are covered in a waterproof oil which they produce. It allows them to float on the water and duck down to catch fish. When the birds are cleaned in detergents, it not only removes the oil but also their waterproof protective covering. Thus many 'rescued and cleaned' seabirds actually die from drowning. It's not a thing you hear in the news but actually the majority of 'rescued' creatures do die, following an oilspill.

Meanwhile at BP . . .

BP might go bankrupt, but I feel that Obama has to take some fault in this incident. He was pushing for this to happen in the first place. BP is doing all they can to clean things up.

Such as? As far as I'm aware they have failed at every attempt and that those attempts were quite pathetic in the first place.

Please can you explain also why you think Obama should take the blame?

It's only because the British couldn't careless about us Americans. That figures as much considering we're going to own the Britfags in the world cup.

BP is a multinational company.

It's just a shame that the USA can't score unless our keeper screws up.

If America was so bothered about it'd they'd do something about it themselves and then give the bill to BP

You don't half write some crap Anna.

Do you actually think before posting or do you just post whatever nonsense comes into your head?

She goes on about someone else being racist in another thread when she is clearly being prejudice herself.

I should mention that if BP goes bankrupt, lots of businesses will also be in crisis. And considering that we are in a recession that defiantly not what they want

Noooooo

The UK needs BP otherwise we would have a whole load of trouble

Watch the news ![/quote]

I do watch the news.

Find some other alternative to oil. Bankrupt the bastards.

We used to have BP gas stations around here all over the place. Suddenly they all disappeared and renamed to Arco. I thought they had gone under until this story emerged. Apparently BP owns Arco.

Mr Obama promised in the campaign to clean up the Federal Mineral Office, which oversees mining and oil drilling, and is known to be one of the most corrupt and inept offices in DC.

He didn't touch it until the oil was already flowing into the Gulf after taking millions in contributions from Oil Industry sources.

BP is the fourth largest private corporation in the world. It would take some doing to bankrupt them, and there is a chance the British Government, which does not own BP but has a vested interest in keeping it afloat, would bail them out as well, even though the government of the UK is hardly in a financial position to do so.

Or is saying that racist/sexist/homophobic/nationalistic since I don't have a rainbow flag in my signature?
