This example really happened to me. Eight years ago or so, I was trying to fix some keyboard problem on my old Genius 3000 toy laptop, but I was stupid enough to remove the entire keyboard and stopped working afterwards.
I thought you meant "broke down" when alone like when my truck stopped running halfway to work, at two in the morning, and I had no idea what happened to it that time. I fiddled with it for half an hour. As this was before cell phones, I had to walk to a pay phone to call in and they sent a patrol car to get me.
Later the mechanic told me the shaft that drives the distributor cap had snapped in two. Something that could not have been fixed on the road.
