A mother whose baby was shot dead during an attempted robbery in Georgia has described how she flung her arms across him, to protect him.

Sherry West told a court she was walking home from a post office in Brunswick in March when she was approached by two teenagers who demanded money.

She was giving evidence at the trial of De'Marquise Elkins, who is accused of murdering 13-month-old Antonio Santiago.

Ms West said: "I told him I had a baby and I had expenses and I didn't have (the money).

"He asked me if I wanted him to shoot my baby. I said, 'Don't shoot my baby.'"

Ms West said the 18-year-old then fired three shots, one of which hit her in the leg, before turning towards her young son.

"I tried to stop him," she said. "I put my arms over my baby but he still shot him."

Ms West told the court that Elkins, who denies murder, then tried to grab her purse and hit her on the head with his gun.

She said she screamed for help before both teenagers ran off.

Asked by prosecutor Andrew Eknomou if she recognised the attacker, she pointed at Elkins, who sat with his defence team and showed no emotion.

He faces life in prison if convicted of murder but will escape the death penalty because he was 17 on the date Antonio was shot.

His alleged accomplice, 15-year-old Dominique Lang, will be tried at a later date.

I hope he gets convicted and spends the rest of his life in prison. I'm betting, however, the 15 year old will get off with just a 'slap on his wrist'.
