Police have issued a warning to homeowners after finding a note written by a burglar as a blueprint of which houses he should rob in Oldham.

The raider penned his ''to do'' list of when, how, where and what to steal after scouring his local area for likely targets.

Entries on his check list talk of Jaguar, Saab and Volvo cars and include ways to help him steal them including: ''kitchen window open'' and ''Saab keys behind door.''

It notes dead end streets and says: ''loads of notes on fireplace'' suggesting the burglar had been peering through windows whilst owners were out.

Other entries talk of pedal bikes being on a front garden and what type of screwdriver to use. One entry read: ''Wooden easy pop back windows'' and another said: ''back door open, laptops, plasma and others.'' A third said: ''Key maybe behind door.''

The to-do list headed Lined Ip Grafts was found by police on a street in Oldham, Greater Manchester after it dropped by the raider following a burglary.

PC Andy Pickering for Greater Manchester Police said: Thieves steal all year round but get particularly busy during the Christmas and New Year period when homes and cars are filled with presents making the items too good to resist for any would-be thief.

This to-do list gives an insight on how thieves identify their targets and should serve as a reminder to householders on how to protect themselves from falling victim to crime.

While most thieves are opportunistic there are some who are more organised and will systematically search out the weaknesses in your neighbourhood for the easiest homes, cars, pedal bikes or other valuables on your property to target and steal.

Being a victim of theft is hard at any time of the year but is particularly so during this special period in the calendar. You can help yourself by putting into action your own 'to-do' list to stop thieves going to work in your community.

Pretty scary stuff there on that list and makes me more aware of what I need to do to protect myself from this happening to me.
