Crime scene investigators look away now - for this little cylinder could signal a revolution in evidence gathering.
A high-tech scanner which can rotate around a scene in 360 degrees and produce detailed 3D images of the area has been unveiled by Essex police, and could soon be rolled out to another 25 forces.
Evidence provided by the scanner can also be used in court, offering a virtual 360 degree model of incidents like a car crash, rape or murder.
The RIEGL VZ-400 works by using a laser beam to survey and record 120,000 tiny details of the scene every second while slowly rotating on a 360 degree axis.
Trials show the scanner can collect a third more data than a police officer in less than half the time - keeping every detail of the scene in pristine digital detail for future playback and analysis.
Tests in London revealed that road closures were, on average, an hour and a half shorter at crashes where the revolutionary new scanner was used.
The futuristic ã108,000 scanner is set to make its debut on Thursday.
