Calling out of work. How often do you do it?

Do you only call out when actually sick or do you play hooky every once in awhile?

Do you think badly of coworkers who stay home?

What excuse do you use? :P

Not very often. I've had to tough it out and go in many times when I was sick with the flu.

I rarely call out. I'll typically go to work and try to push through as long as I can and just go home if I can't handle it. On top of that, I have active intermittent FMLA for health issues and I'm allowed 1 absence per week for "illness" or "appointment" relating to my condition.

I have called in sick a grand total of 3 times in the 14 years that I've been at my current job. The first time I'd been working there for a year. I had just gotten back from my cousin's wedding in BC. I woke up the next morning with a bit of a scratchy throat. Honestly, I didn't feel that bad but I just couldn't get myself going so early in the morning and used it as an excuse.

I didn't call in sick again until a few years ago. I woke up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom and had a severe dizzy spell that didn't go away. I get them from time to time but they're usually not too bad and for whatever reason don't coincide with work days. This one got so bad that I was throwing up if I even tried to get up and move around. So yeah, no work for me that day.

The third time was actually just a few weeks ago. Sunday of my weekend off I woke up with my throat feeling funny and it developed into a cough. I woke up Monday morning with a low grade fever, cough, and a sinus headache. I also didn't have the will to live so no work for me. I never tested for it but I suspect it may have been Covid. I do get a cold from time to time and I usually just power through it. Whatever this was put me out. I was in bed all day Monday. I didn't miss another day of work but it was only because I couldn't afford to. I basically had zero energy the rest of the week, although by Thursday was feeling more like myself again.

One if the last jobs i held were others were my boss, i called in often. I hated that job. It was slave labour for pittance of money so i felt no loyalty or work ethic towards the company. Plus, i didn't need the job. I feel very sorry for those that need to work these demeaning jobs to survive. Some of the shittiest jobs in life do not pay enough and so deserve the lack of work ethic. It's usually the largest corporations that pay the least amount and expect you to jump throw hoops for a wage that doesn't put food on the table. I think GenZ and the tail end of the millennials will change this due to their lack of care when it comes to doing these minimal wage jobs... and rightly so. The middle class is fading because of the upper class greed. A miss balance in wealth has increased in the last 5 years and needs to change. It will be changed by all the silent quitting. Why be loyal to companies that care so little for those that make them profit?

Not often, if it can be helped. I remember around 2005, I worked at ON, got very sick and had to miss a week of work because of it. Every time I called in, they thought I was crying because I literally had no voice. But yeah, when I'm very sick I call in because I would rather not pass that mess along to others not that some employers care if you are sick or not.

When I'm sick. I'm not opposed to calling out if something unexpected comes up and stuff does happen.

No, why would I?

"I'm not feeling well, I'm not coming in."

"Oh but you're the only one we have in that department."

"Okay. I'm not coming in."
