Can members delete accounts on your forums?

How do you feel about deleting accounts? How do you handle it?

They can request it, but they cannot delete the account themselves.

I believe proboards have the option to self delete.

Same here. I've seen a lot of people over the years request a account deletion and then later regret it and make a new account. That's why I don't delete accounts right away. I'll tell the member we'll revisit the topic of account deletion at a later date. If they are persistent in their request then I'll grant their wish eventually.

What I do is wait for them to confirm, change the account name to "Deleted member #...whatever" and then if they come back, I've got a list of who is who and can give them their account back, no issues.

Thats a good idea, preserving the account but calling it "deleted" :evillaugh:

Not impulsively, no. We have had a few members regret it and they deleted their accounts based off of drama that had happened. So there is a policy- if you want your account deleted you need to think about it for a few days to cool down and if you really want it removed then we will remove it for you.

There's no option on Jcink for members to delete their own accounts and even if there was, I wouldn't enable it. They would have to request deletion directly from me and even then it depends on their reasoning behind wanting an account deletion that will make me commit to it or not.

Had that happened since I rebooted my forum weeks ago just because the 2 ex-members can't handle me or the way I stood up to them or whatever. One deleted their account earlier just because that member bossed me around, so I sent him a PM and I overruled that member.

Nope. Had a member recently request that after throwing a hissy fit. I simply changed said users password and put them in their own little group which cant do anything

You could change their username to "Deleted User" to make them feel like their account was deleted :P

Same for me.

Members can't self-delete (if they could, then too many would ragequit in the heat of the moment), but they can request it if they wish.

However, I suggest they only request deletion if they are absolutely sure they are 100% done, and never coming back. Otherwise, I can disable or anonymise the account (all of which is reversible), or they can simply stop visiting temporarily.

This is genius!

I've never asked for an account to be deleted as a regular member, I just stop logging in / delete the forum from my bookmarks.
