I have ran across a strange problem with Notepad... I was able to view Unicode characters on Notepad before, even some of my own Notepad files (that contain Japanese text) until I now see them as boxes. Fortunately, if I copy text containing Unicode characters into something else (like Word), they appear fine. So... how can this be fixed?

I don't even know if the installation of Google Chrome caused this

I encountered a similar problem, only it was with Windows Media Player. The only solution I found was to set my laptop to Japanese format, then set the language bar in the taskbar back to EN(UK).

Keep in mind that this only happened recently, but not really since I installed Chrome. I also can't view other scripts in Notepad also such as Chinese, Korean and various Indian languages. Greek I can view okay.

I don't know if I should do the same thing as what you did, as long as it doesn't screw up with my system.

An update... the computers at college happened to have Chrome also and when I pasted in some Unicode text (again Japanese) on Notepad, it came out fine. So, it's not Chrome affecting this after all which has really baffled me now. How come that text shows up fine there but not on my laptop's Notepad? I need an explanation.

Why don't you call your laptop's tech support and ask them? That's what I would do.

Maybe you changed Notepad's default font to something that doesn't include those characters?

No, I did not change the font.

Well it doesn't matter now, as the problem went away itself. Strange... very strange :s Hope it doesn't come back again.
