Changing Software Won’t Save You

Do you think if a dying forum changes it's software, will that even matter?

Will members suddenly be more interested in the community because the gadgets and buttons look different?

Nah. I feel it is the amount of daily/weekly participation, thread creation, and posts that make the forum what it is. Sure, design can hurt or help, but overall it is activity.

This forum has converted software's a few times. Seems like the members here care about people and discussions more than anything else. After you switch over, it's still the same community of people (or lack there of) so not much changes after the adjustment period.

It's all about the content and the niche you provide. If the content is good and worth reading, members will stick around.
