Have you ever changed the focus of your forum or been on a forum that has done this?

For example a forum about baseball turns into a forum about all sports

or

a general chat forum turns into a support forum for people with cancer..

etc etc

I've been a long time member of a site that was once called Juggalo Forum. But about a year ago they changed the name to Hate Machine and aimed it at not just Psychopathic Records music, but the rest of the Underground music community.

Funny you ask this because my forum Hadaway just did this. We went from essentially what was a General Discussion forum to one that hopefully have a more RP focus (while still keeping our General Discussion part quite active).

I hate it when people do that!!

Why not just use another domain and start again.

I've never done this or been on a board that done this, but if i was i'd be very annoyed.

Its not necessarily a bad thing. If the community all gets together and makes a group decision on the focus change, then thats what they should do.

Yeah, no one was active on my site at the time though. Faded Paw Prints used to be a wolf roleplaying site... Now it's just a general roleplaying site which includes a lot of the previous elements it used to have.

Don't mind it so long as the sites don't become something completely unrelated. Most of the members normally stick around after the change so it feels like the same site at least. I remember this one Legend of Zelda site I used to go on turning into a general gaming site, then back to a Legend of Zelda site when it got a good amount of members active.

I don't view it as a bad thing or why can't they just get a new domain and start new. Like Nebulous said if your community gets together and decides as a group it's fine. Which is exactly what Hadaway did, we spent a long time discussing what we wanted and decided on the Roleplaying focus rather than everything like we used to be.
