Do school authorities have the right to search students’ lockers? What do you feel? Is it an infringement on your rights? Or do you think it is necessary to prevent drugs/alcohol/weapons?

Discuss.

If you've got nothing to hide, then you've got nothing to hide. It's just your locker, at school. Keep it at home. Still, I wouldn't really like people rooting through my stuff. My school's never had anything like that, never heard of a school in a country which does. If a teacher suspects a student in particular though, if they back up their suspicions with logical reasons, then it's fair enough for the school to unlock the student's locker and check.

Our school has had dogs come in, and sniff for drugs. Every time, they've found some. So I suppose in situations it can be justified.

But the locker is their property, technically. For me, it doesn't matter. I've got nothing to hide. If police have nothing better to do that go through my lockers, all the power to them.

What about when they make everyone leave the class room while the drug dogs sniff their backpacks?

Once again, if you've got something to hide, don't bring it in a public place. It is against school rules, you know it's against school rules, so don't bring it.

If you want to do drugs, leave them at home if you don't want them to be found.

That is honestly true.. don't do something you know is against school rules..[/quote]

Thanks for agreeing. I remember a debate about this came up in our law class, and everyone agreed with this same stand. If it's against the rules, don't do it.

What you have in your locker, should stay between you and the people you decide to share it with. It's called an invasion of privacy which is frowned upon in the USA.

Say you were a boss at an office. If you went up to your employee and searched their personal belongings, you would get fired, loss of license and sued.

You just don't do these things, who knows what kids keep in their lockers that is NOT against school rules that causes them great emotional distress of someone else knows about it.

I was reading this and thinking and thinking. You know techinally those rights too privacy don't really exist in high school or junior high. The reason being is the saftey for the students. After April 20 1996, school officals have the right too go through lockers bring in dogs etc. We don't want another columbine. I certeinly don't want too deal with the stress of loosing more people. Back on subject, when i was in high school i would rather have the search lockers and bring in dogs, then deal with peer pressure and wondering if getting shot in school would ever happen too me

It just comes down too the possobility of someone having something that is all they need.

My school lets the police train new dogs by sniffing the lockers. It doesn't bother me. It's hilarious, because there's always like 2 people in every class that get called down to the office.

How would a drug dog sniffing lockers, but not opening them affect anything? Do you think drug dogs are fine? In the way you put it, I still don't see how any distress can be felt with just the drug sniffing dog.

I think they should only check them if they actually think there is stuff in their or can smell it, there has been a number of times when the police were called to my old school about drugs, one which was a locker lower than mine, you could clearly smell the weed.

But i don't think they should be able to open someones locker and just check through it, i believe that is an invasion of privacy.

Agreed.

I don't have any problems with the school searching my locker, I have nothing to hide. The lockers are school property and legally they have every right to search them. Honestly, why should you care unless you're hiding something?

I think it's a good idea for every school to regularly search their lockers, to ensure no student is stashing any illegal drugs or weapons, or anything else that is against school rules.

That sucks. My high school does, mainly because it wouldn't be possible to carry all of the books we get (lol), but with conditions. They check every locker twice a week, once during the middle of the school week and again on weekends.

Why would anyone put anything in their locker besides books/bags/coats/lunch?

I think it would keep everyone happy if they brought the dogs in if they suspected and if the dog found something then you can open the locker. that's a lot less like ly to offend most people.

and btw: what the hell do you do then? where do you go to school?

As far as I know, my school doesn't have lockers either. We just carry our stuff round in our bags... no biggie.
