By the end of the day Sunday, four Walmart stores in Chicago shut down forever.

The retailer said it closed the stores because they were underperforming. Residents and community leaders are skeptical.

People in the communities affected will have to travel farther for groceries and other necessities.

The abrupt closing comes just five days after residents in Chatham, Lakeview, Little Village and Bronzeville found out about Walmart's decision to close the stores.

"It's one less option. Came here for lower prices. So now I'm here for one last time to get what I need," said Michael Gerald, a Little Village resident. "They just suddenly say, 'we're closing,' and, it's like, that's it? No warning though?"

People are upset, and expressed that frustration in another rally in Chatham on Sunday.

Walmart said the stores have not been profitable over the years, claiming to have lost tens of millions of dollars.

I heard about this on the Walmart subreddit. A member of the community lost their job because their store closed, but thankfully they're getting paid for the next few months so they can get some form of income while looking for a new job. I think it's super odd that they're shutting down stores, surely these stores were making enough to keep afloat since it's Walmart and you all know how busy these stores can be.

The Walmart in my town will probably never shut down. And I'm rural, too! But honestly, we only buy groceries there (on-line, then pick up). But if something did happen, there are other choices for us around....

A shame about the loss of employment, tho...

All stores expect some theft to occur no matter what but in their case the theft was so great that it essentially cost them money to operate or to put it another way didn't make them enough money to pay the bills for being open hence why they got shuttered. The government can't go around being openly hostile to punishing criminals and then expect businesses of any sort to stick around for long.

True dat, I wonder how anything stays open where I am. They literally do nothing to shoplifters.
