Chicago Police Superintendent Garry McCarthy on Wednesday announced that his department removed 131 illegal guns from the city's streets on New Year's Eve, bringing the year's total to 7,624 -- far more, per capita, than the New York Police Department has found.

According to police, the 131 guns recovered on New Year's Eve -- including assault rifles, semi-automatic guns and handguns -- surpassed the 2010 total of 83 guns.

Our officers are doing exceptional work to collect these guns and this should serve as a reminder of the violence our officers face every day, McCarthy said in a statement announcing the surge in weapon recovery.

Two gunmen shot a 14-year-old boy several times Friday night as he stood on his porch, leaving him to die in the front hallway of his Humboldt Park home, authorities said.

The shooting came just hours after a 15-year-old boy was fatally shot in a separate attack in the Little Village neighborhood. Including both homicides, at least six teens were shot since Friday afternoon, according to police.

In the Humboldt Park shooting, two male shooters opened fire about 11:50 p.m. in the 2400 block of West Augusta Boulevard, striking the boy multiple times in the chest, Chicago Police Department News Affairs Officer Amina Greer said.

And DC has its own very tough gun laws.... for the law abiding citizen that is....

Police say the robberies started at around 7:00 p.m. in the 3300 block of 6th Street SE. After that, there were two more reported robberies in Southeast and five more in Northwest.
