Thousands of dogs and cats slaughtered at China festival despite government promises to crack down
21 Jun 2015

Thousands of cats and dogs have been slaughtered at the Yulin Festival despite government promises to end the practice which has been condemned internationally on grounds of animal cruelty.

Hundreds of traders gathered in China’s southern Guangxi province on Sunday for the annual feast where dogs are served with lychees to mark the summer solstice.

Local authorities failed to honour pledges to ban the festival following an online petition signed by half a million people.

Remember this the next time you buy something in a store and think "it doesn't matter where it's made".

Protesters 'muzzled'.

Yulin (China) (AFP) - Campaigners protesting at China's annual dog meat festival, which sees thousands of canines butchered and eaten, were forcibly dispersed by unidentified men Monday as they tried to rally outside a government office.

About 10 animal rights activists unfurled banners outside the Yulin government headquarters before a group of 20 men came and chased them off, according to an AFP photographer at the scene.

The city in the southeastern region of Guangxi holds an annual festival on the summer solstice devoted to the consumption of dog meat, in defiance of an increasing backlash from animal rights activists.

The campaigners held signs reading "Crack Down on Illegal Dog Meat Trade" and "Punish Illegal Dog Transport", but the banners were quickly torn out of their hands by the unidentified group.

Glad people there thought this was wrong and decided to protest. Shame they didn't make a difference.
