Smooth said:That's surprising that the bloodwork didn't turn up anything. There are other tests that can be run, and I would think that an ex-ray would be in order next.
I hear stories like this, and I instantly go into vet tech mode, so if you don't mind, I'd like to ask you a couple things. My apologies if any of these have been answered already.
What breed is your dog?
Is he altered?
How old is he?
Have you had him his whole life?
Do you get him tested for heartworm every year?
Smooth said:Ok, first off, good on you for having him altered. Way too many pet owners have some weird idea that neutering is bad for a pet. (Bozos)
So he's still young, which is in your favor. Younger dogs are very resilient and if he's had good care all his life, he has a better chance at beating whatever this is that's causing him problems.
You don't have mosquitos where you live? That is how heartworm is transmitted and is a major problem here in Michigan.
I'm going to mull this over some more, look up a couple things, and probably have more questions for you.
I am NOT a veterinarian and cannot diagnose anything for you, but I may be able to come up with something to help figure out this mystery.
How much does he weigh now?
How much weight has he lost in what time period?
What is his feeding schedule, and has he gone off his feed at all?
Smooth said:When did you first notice him losing weight?
Do you have a bathroom scale? You can weigh yourself, then hold him and step on the scale again and figure the difference to get his weight.

Smooth said:Ok, this dog is a slim breed as it is, and he should weigh in the neighborhood of 60 pounds, (27 - 33 kilos) depending on his height. My next question is, where did you get him? A breeder or a rescue or what?
Jazzy said:@ Alan: Do you know if they ran a test to check Skippers thyroid? After my little boy Louie had his cancer surgery, he started to gain a lot of weight. They thought the cancer may have spread to his stomach. He went from weighing 7 lbs ( which is normal for his breed and size) to 14 lbs in a matter of a few months. They did an xray ( negative). They did an ultrasound ( negative). They then thought he had Cushings (negative). I finally asked them to check his thyroid level ( BINGO positive)! They put him on thyroid medication and he started losing weight. He's now weighing in at 8 lbs and has stayed there at that weight for 6 months now. He has to be tested every 6 months but so far so good!
