I think some elderly people just get fluid in their lungs and they sit there trying to cough it all up. When I was 9 years old, I remember seeing an elderly lady over in Branson, Missouri coughing up wads of mucus and spitting it on the cement in the park.

A lot of elderly people die from Pneumonia. I wonder if this is connected?
Very possible! Buildup of fluid in the lungs and being too weak to expel it, it could easily cause problems.
