Gay rights activists say it’s a matter of equality; they suggest that homosexuals should have the same rights and protections as heterosexuals, including:

• Protection against discrimination in employment, housing and immigration.

• An expansion of hate crime laws to include sexual orientation.

• Domestic partner benefits similar to those granted to married couples.

• The right to marry or have their relationships recognized in “civil unions.”

• The ability to serve in the military without hiding their sexuality.

Others, though, say special rights shouldn’t be granted on the basis of behavior -- particularly one that many Americans find offensive. And some say that current laws are adequate to protect all Americans, regardless of their sexual orientation.

For many Americans, the issue hinges on the question of whether homosexuality is a choice or an innate characteristic with which people are born.

Advocates of gay rights say sexual orientation, like race or disability, can’t be changed, and therefore homosexuals should be protected like any other minority group. Most opponents argue that homosexuality is a lifestyle choice that shouldn’t be rewarded.

Your thoughts?

This debate plays a huge role in my life, As i've had many people speak to me saying that it is a lifestyle choice, it honestly isn't.

Why would I choose to be gay? I'm proud and happy with who I am, But it's definitely than being straight, if I was straight I'd probably have a girlfriend right now, but no, because i'm gay, the main thing on my mind is coming out the closet, which i wouldn't have to do if I was straight.

We deserve the same rights as anyone else.

I'm against all gay rights, but if you're going to be gay, be gay, stop parading down the street, just be gay and get on with your life. I'm straight, but I don't go parading down the street or fight for straight rights in areas where gays are largely accepted.

I agree with Mike, gay people deserve the same rights as everyone else.

Can you give me any examples of where you might need to do this please?

Not every gay is as flamboyant as you may think, in fact, not a lot are. There are the same amount of straight guys that rub their sexuality in everyones faces, you know, the I can get any girl i want Whistle at a girl walking past etc. They do my head in as well.

Overly flamboyant gays annoy me sooooo much, but at the end of the day that doesn't mean they don't deserve any rights.

If you are proud and happy with who you are then why are you hiding in the closet?

It's because I'm not sure how people will take it, especially people at school. I'll be going to an all boys school, so I will definitely be discriminated against if I come out.

Yet you think you deserve equal rights. How can you get equal rights if you hide and not be counted for?

You're not sure how people will take it? I thought you said you very happy and proud to be who you are. I've got news for you people already know and are just waiting for you to come out and tell them.

Okay so you'll be going to an all boys school and say you will definately be discriminated againt. Are you planning on wearing an I'm Gay shirt? Do you really think you are the only gay boy that will attend that school?

Come on here! You are afraid because I don't think you truly have accepted the fact that you are gay and until you do that, you can keep that closet door closed.

I understand the fact that I won't need equal rights until I come out, and I will do so this year hopefully. I'm aware people that are close to me will have figured it out, but i'm just not ready to discuss it with them.

And I know that I definitely won't be the gay boy that goes to the school, but no one else will have come out, The fact there are others doesn't mean I won't be discriminated against

I'm just not ready, that's all.

No disrespect but if everyone was gay then the world would end , lol.

God made us to be with a women in my opinion.. clearly or the human race would slowly but surely come to an end

ON THE OTHER HAND....

People deserve to be treated exactly the same weather people agree with it or not, it should not be illegal or anything it is a free country.

Not really, I'm sure the gays could suck it up and reproduce.

God made us to be with a women in my opinion

Then why did he make some people gay? (Assuming he exists) And why did he make certain animals gay?

I'm against all gay rights, but if you're going to be gay, be gay, stop parading down the street, just be gay and get on with your life. I'm straight, but

I'm almost positive you are religious.

Alrighty, you don't go parading your sexuality, white people didn't go parading their race, blacks did because they were being denied civil rights. Gays are doing the exact same thing, why is it ok for blacks but not gays?

I don't go parading down the street or fight for straight rights in areas where gays are largely accepted.

And what would you need to do that for?

Male was intended to be with female, and female was intended to be with male. Object to that all you want, but you'll never convince me otherwise. Ever wonder why male and female can reproduce, but two of the same sex can not? That's because they were not meant to.

Are you comparing yourself to an animal? Surely not. Dogs go around smelling each other's crap, but that doesn't mean I'm going to go around smelling everyone's feces.
