How do you compete with other forums? Is competition a good thing or a bad thing in your opinion?

I try to avoid competition with others of my genre. I think it just leads to bad things. Not that I have actual experience. I just think thats what could happen.

Competition between fourms just leads to the two or more parties disliking each other. I find competition between forums to be a bad thing, unless of course, it is friendly competition only.

Competition is a good thing for a number of reasons.

Competition validates your idea.

Competition helps educate your target market

Competition pushes you

Competition forces focus & differentiation

But if you focus too much on your competition;

It stifles creativity

It keeps you from focusing on your own members

It's hard to avoid competition in the genre Level Up is in. Entertainment/general chat forums are everywhere and I believe that advertising on those forums can only help my forum, so yeah, I don't mind a bit of competition.

I don't really strive to be better than competition.. Personally I think that similar forums should work together and help each other out.
