What are your thoughts on monitoring of computers at school or work?

For example, at my work: they can read my work-email, view all my browser history, block any websites they want, view any files saved to the computer I use, check what time I logged in/ how long I was on/ when I logged out. Thats what I know for sure.. They could also have keyloggers and who knows what else in place.

Well, I don't have to worry about that at the workplace, since I don't use computers there. However, when I was in school, there was a computer class I took where the teacher monitored what was being accessed by a student. I did my work before trying to browse the web, of course, but when I couldn't access Internet Explorer due to the automated restriction placed on it by the teacher, I simply used My Documents as my browser.

Regards,

Kevin

I think they have every right to monitor computer usage both at school and work.

I work in the data center for the state where I live.

If your school is not monitoring student and teacher web access, rest assured, somebody upstream somewhere is. That and scanning emails, forums, and even chat rooms.

You also do not have to be on the premises or using a remote access program for them to snoop through your hard drive and everything on it, and everything plugged into the machine, like an external storage device. If you go into your school or work email account to check your mail, there is probably script on the site to monitor for outside threats. That monitoring may include scanning your machine for resident malware or viruses.

Which explains why I very seldom check my work account from home and I never remote in.

At collage, on the wireless, even though I'm on my laptop, they can still see what I've been on. And they can block any websites.
